Renal and Dialysis Services

Renal and Dialysis Services provide scheduled and emergency haemodialysis for adults with acute or chronic kidney disease who require renal replacement therapy.

Three steps for dialysis care

1

Keep to your assigned treatment schedule

Attend on the days and times assigned by the renal team unless they tell you otherwise. If you cannot attend, contact the unit as early as possible.
2

Prepare for treatment

Bring identification, your medication information and any instructions from the renal team. Follow the diet, fluid and medication guidance you have been given.
3

Report changes before treatment starts

Tell staff about fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling, bleeding or problems with your dialysis access, or if you have missed a treatment.

Visit Information

Before your visit

Follow the renal team’s instructions for medicines, food and fluids. Contact the unit if you are unwell before your session or if there is a problem with your dialysis access.

On arrival

Staff will check your condition before dialysis, which may include weight, blood pressure, symptoms and assessment of the dialysis access.

During your visit

The team monitors you throughout treatment and responds to symptoms such as cramps, dizziness, blood-pressure changes or other concerns. Tell staff immediately if you feel unwell.

Urgent or safety advice

Do not wait for your next dialysis session if you develop severe shortness of breath, chest pain, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding or another emergency. Call 911 or go to the Emergency Room.
