St. Jude Hospital

Emergency: call 911 or come directly

George Odlum Stadium

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The Intensive Care Unit provides continuous monitoring and advanced support for critically ill patients. Admission is based on clinical need and is coordinated by the treating and critical-care teams.

Three things families should know

1

ICU admission is a clinical decision

Patients are admitted when they require intensive monitoring, treatment or organ support that cannot be safely provided on a general ward.
2

Choose one main family contact

Families should identify one main contact person to receive updates and share them with relatives. This helps the team communicate clearly while protecting patient privacy.
3

Follow ICU safety and visiting guidance

Follow hand-hygiene, infection-prevention, privacy and visiting instructions from ICU staff. Visiting may change according to the patient’s condition and work taking place in the unit.

Visit Information

Before your visit

Contact the ICU if you need current visiting guidance. Bring only essential personal items and follow any infection-control instructions given by staff.

On arrival

ICU patients may be connected to monitors, oxygen, breathing support, intravenous medicines and other equipment. Staff can explain the equipment and the immediate plan of care.

During your visit

The multidisciplinary critical-care team provides continuous monitoring and treatment, reviews progress frequently and coordinates with other specialties as required.

Urgent or safety advice

If you are seeking emergency care for yourself or another person, do not come to ICU as a walk-in service. Call 911 or go to the Emergency Room. ICU admission is arranged by the clinical team.

ICU support may include

  • Continuous critical-care monitoring
  • Advanced respiratory and airway support
  • Hemodynamic and shock management
  • Post-operative critical care
  • Neurological monitoring and support
  • Renal support in collaboration with renal services
  • Multidisciplinary critical-care management
