Nutrition and Dietary Services

Nutrition and Dietary Services provide clinical nutrition assessment, dietary counselling and support for therapeutic diets for inpatients and referred outpatients.

Three steps to nutrition care

1

Get referred or identify a nutrition need

Nutrition care may be requested by your hospital team or arranged as an outpatient referral for conditions where diet and nutrition are part of treatment.
2

Prepare for the assessment

Bring referral information, your medication list, relevant laboratory results and details of allergies, food restrictions, supplements and your usual eating pattern.
3

Follow the nutrition care plan

The Nutritionist will agree goals and recommendations with you and arrange follow-up when needed. Inpatients may also receive a prescribed therapeutic diet through the hospital meal service.

Visit Information

Before your visit

Tell staff about food allergies, swallowing problems, cultural or religious dietary needs, supplements and medical conditions that affect what you eat.

On arrival

For an outpatient consultation, register as directed and bring the referral and relevant clinical information. For inpatients, nutrition assessment is coordinated with the ward team.

During your visit

The Nutritionist may complete a nutrition assessment, provide medical nutrition therapy and counselling, develop an individual care plan, and coordinate therapeutic diet requirements with the hospital meal service.

Urgent or safety advice

If you are admitted and cannot eat, are having repeated difficulty with meals, have swallowing problems, or your prescribed diet is not being received, tell the ward team promptly so the concern can be escalated.
